National Seminar on Jayanta Mahapatra organised by Department of English and Modern European Languages, University of Allahabad
A Two-Day National Seminar on the topic “Poeming the World: Jayanta Mahapatra’s Contribution to Indian English Poetry” was hosted by the Department of English and Modern European Languages, University of Allahabad, from 12-13 march 2024 at the Ishwar Topa Building located in the University premises. The Inaugural Session commenced with Lighting of the Lamp. The Convener Prof. Manoj Kumar addressed the esteemed invitees and felicitated them with angavastra and a pot of basil. Commemorating Mahapatra, Prof. Manoj put forward the aims and objectives of the seminar. Following Prof Manoj Kumar, Prof. Susheel Kumar Sharma, Head of the Department of English and Modern European Languages, University of Allahabad, spoke on the themes of the seminar, reminiscing his conversations with Jayanta Mahapatra. Prof. Sharma also talked on the poetic journey of Jayanta Mahapatra.
Prof. Sanjoy Saxena, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, spoke about his interactions with Mahapatra in England, praising his generous nature. Dr. Danielle Hanson delivered an eloquent Editorial Address and the formal Book Launch of “Sidelines: View Points on Susheel Kumar Sharma’s The Door is Half Open by Danielle Hanson”. The Keynote Speaker, Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Head of the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University, elaborated on the religious rigidity and gendered justice in the poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra. The keynote speaker, Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui talked about the problem of nomenclature in Indian English Writing and he talked about the engagement on the part of the readers, the importance of silence, emotions, nostalgia in Mahapatra’s poetry. He spoke about the requirement of slow reading of poetry involving a revisionist view of the reality, giving examples of Sukrata Paul, Sami Rafiq, Prof. S. K. Sharma and Ranu Uniyal. This was followed by the Chief Guest’s address, Former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Allahabad, Prof. Krishna Gopal Srivastava.
