CSIR-IITR celebrates World Environment Day
On the occasion of World Environment Day, the CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research organized a grand celebration on 5th June 2025, marked by a series of events focused on environmental awareness, and scientific engagement. The event witnessed the gracious presence of, Padma Shri Dr. C. N. Manjunath, a renowned senior cardiologist, former Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and currently serving as the Member of Parliament from Bengaluru Rural. The event was also graced by Dr. Venu Gopal Achanta, Director of CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, and Dr. Prabodh Kumar Trivedi, Director of CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.
The celebration commenced with a plantation, symbolizing the commitment to environmental sustainability. This was followed by the formal inauguration of the Science Exhibition and the Diamond Jubilee Annex.
A traditional lamp-lighting ceremony was held to mark the auspicious beginning of the program. The guests were formally welcomed by Dr. N. Manickam. The event continued with a presentation on the genesis and growth of CSIR-IITR, followed by the Diamond Jubilee Elocution Address (IDEA), highlighting the institute’s legacy and its vision for the future.
Dr. R. Parthasarathi introduced the audience to the significance and contributions of the Dr. C. R. Krishnamurti Memorial, an initiative dedicated to honoring the memory of the esteemed scientist. On this occasion, the Monsoon Report was officially released, offering valuable insights into environmental trends and data.
The Chief Guest, Dr. C. N. Manjunath, delivered an insightful keynote address on the “Impact of Environmental and Occupational Exposures on Cardiovascular Health Outcomes,” emphasizing the critical link between environmental factors and public health, particularly heart health.
Two significant releases were also made during the event: EARTH 2025, focused on environmental research and technological harmonization, and the “My Stamp” card, a special commemorative stamp reflecting CSIR-IITR’s contributions.
Subsequently, Dr. Venu Gopal Achanta delivered an insightful lecture highlighting recent advancements in science with a focus on environmental sustainability, followed by an award distribution ceremony recognizing the winners of the Painting and Poster Competitions, as well as the Diamond Jubilee IDEATHON, a platform designed to encourage innovative thinking among young minds. Dr. Prabodh Kumar Trivedi then addressed the audience, sharing his insights on the importance of science in addressing environmental challenges.
The event concluded with the Presidential Remarks delivered by Dr. N. Bhaskar, Director of CSIR-IITR, who commended the efforts of the organizing team and reiterated the institute’s commitment to scientific excellence and environmental stewardship.
Finally, Dr. Akshay Dwarkanath delivered the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, participants, and attendees for their enthusiastic involvement and support in making the celebration a success.
The World Environment Day celebration at CSIR-IITR stood as a vibrant testament to the institute’s unwavering dedication to fostering environmental consciousness through science, innovation, and community engagement. With the convergence of distinguished guests, inspiring addresses, meaningful initiatives, and enthusiastic participation, the event not only honored the spirit of environmental stewardship but also reinforced the pivotal role of scientific research in building a sustainable future. As the institute continues to champion causes at the intersection of health, environment, and technology, the celebration served as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we share in preserving our planet for generations to come.
